Help Us Restore The Caboose!

It’s here!

We finally made it! Thanks to the generosity of many people inside and outside of Pana, “Butch” Morez’s Union Pacific CA-5 caboose has landed in its new home, outside the Pana Interlocker Tower, at the corner of Main and Oak Sts. in Pana. It was a tremendous day as people came from the area to watch the placement. It was a celebration of our community!

While getting the caboose placed here was a tremendous accomplishment, there is still more work to be done. The caboose has “good bones,” but there is work to be done on the interior and the exterior. There are still a lot of unknowns, such as the presence of lead paint, window replacement, flooring work, re-welding of the undercarriage attachments, furnace flue replacement, etc. We’re still assessing what needs to be done to have it in shape so the public can tour the caboose.

So, with that stated, the Pana Historical Society has started a new Facebook page, “Restore the Caboose!” It will be the public’s opportunity to check in on the progress of restoration efforts but also help in financing the work which needs to be done. Donation can be made on-line as well as mailed to the Pana Historical Society, P. O. Box 225., Pana, IL 62557. Please note “Restore the Caboose” in the memo line. Contributions can also be dropped off at the Taylorville Community Credit Union’s Pana office at 101 E. Fifth St. We can also use expert advise from people who have some knowledge of railroad equipment and we would be happy for you to volunteer as we continue our restoration journey.
